Editor’s Note: Below is a questions and answers column running each Tuesday called “Coach’s Corner.” Sports editor Josh Koehn and former Gavilan football coach Bob Garcia, father of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia, will talk about all things football.
Koehn: Hey, how you doing?
Garcia: I’m all right, just walked in. How you doing, Josh?
K: I’m doing good. You got a second to talk about the Super Bowl?
G: Sure, lets talks about it.
K: OK, real good. It was one of those games where it was pretty slow for three quarters and then the fourth quarter was a pretty epic finish.
G: I think both teams had their opportunities to win. I think it came down to a couple guys making big plays. I think that receiver from Pittsburgh—
K: Santonio Holmes.
G: Holmes, he did a great job. But, then again, the quarterback had to get the ball there (on the last touchdown) and there were three guys there. It’s like a breakdown in defensive coverage, you leave a guy open. They go to one side and it’s almost there, they go to the other side and all of a sudden they get it. I always thought Pittsburgh, because of their defense – hey, that interception before the half. If somebody stops him it’s over. It’s still only a three-point ballgame, but right there that’s a 14-point turnover.
K: Yeah. James Harrison, the league’s defensive MVP, he definitely played like it on that play.
G: And that other one, where he go that roughing, I don’t care how good the guys is, that’s not called for. Especially when you’ve been around a a league and you’re a player that everyone looks up to. That was unbelievable. They should have kicked [Harrison] out.
K: Was that the punch?
G: Yeah, well, a punch, it was the one where he got the guy down and then he pushed him back.
K: Yeah, you know I thought that was actually going to give Arizona the ball back for a a personal foul.
G: I thought so too. And then that last pay of the game —
K: How did they not review that? Read the rest of this entry »

Koehn: Bobby, it’s Josh Koehn
Garcia: Hey, Josher. What’s going on?
K: Not much. How you doing?
G: I’m doing good. I just got a haircut (from my wife, Linda). How about that?
K: I heard. I heard you’re ready to go. I heard you’re all ready for the Inauguration, looking sharp.
G: I couldn’t make it over there (to Washington), but I’m having a big party at my place?
K: Are you having a party?
G: No. (laughing)
K: Well, I know you’re a big Obama guy and you know I am, so we’re both excited for this.
G: I think it’s going to be great. I hope everything works out for him.
K: Yeah, he’s going to have a tough road, but I think he’ll do a great job. I have a friend out in Washington right now and he was at the big concert they had on Sunday—
G: Wasn’t it beautiful. I watched it on TV. Did you watch it?
K: I saw some of it and it was just huge. My friend said there were 400,000 people there, the biggest crowd he’s ever seen. And he said [today] they’re expecting 2,000,000.
G: Yeah, especially as cold as it was, and everybody out there, and all those songs that all those artists sang, it just gave me goose pimples — just so proud to be an American.
K: Yeah, it really is a great time to be an American, no doubt about it.
G: But anyhow, my Steelers are still rolling. Read the rest of this entry »

Koehn: Bobby, it’s Josh Koehn.
Garcia: Hey, Josh. How you doing?
K: I’m doing good. How are you?
G: Well, I’m out trying to do a job, but I’ve broken all my hoses and I can’t find anybody to fix them. So, it’s kind of a crappy day.
K: You doing some work in the backyard?
G: Yeah, I’m doing some work up in the hills.
K: Well, you got a quick second to talk?
G: Yeah.
K: Well, let’s talk some playoff football. What did you think of the games this weekend?
G: Well, I tell you what, my Steelers are still going.
K: There you have a team that’s definitely looking good.
G: I tell you what, the surprising one is Arizona. They’re really playing well. They really took it to Carolina.
K: I did not see that one coming at all.
G: I didn’t either. Especially the quarterback, Jake Delhomme, what in the heck was he thinking? He wasn’t seeing anything. Read the rest of this entry »

Koehn: Bobby, it’s Josh Koehn.
Garcia: Hey, Josh. What’s happening?
K: Not much. How you doing?
G: I’m doing all right, just got a little chewed out by my son a little bit.
K: Really?
G: Well, that last article we put out, Tampa Bay, I don’t know which paper it was, ran it in its full content. I feel bad that I mentioned, like, Derrick Brooks, a pulled hamstring, that he looked like he was in a wheelchair. He was really trying — it kind of hurt him.
K: Well, you mentioned he had an injury and everything.
G: I know it. Anyhow, whatever. I feel bad about that. I really did.
K: Well, we’re not trying to —
G: We’re not trying to rip anybody. Whatever. … I except full responsibility for what came out of my mouth. What the hell? What more can I say?
G: Well, we’re going to try to keep you out of trouble this week and just talk about the playoffs then.
K: Well, you know what, my two teams that I picked (for the Super Bowl), hell, they’re already out the door. So, I gotta hang it up, man. Read the rest of this entry »

K: Not much. Merry Christmas, by the way.
G: Hey, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and you know what, the bleeding has stopped.
K: I bet the last couple days were pretty rough.
G: Oh, I’m telling you, I know a guy who was talking to (Steve) Mariucci, and Mariucci talked with Warren Sapp, [who’s] on that NFL (Network show), and he said [Sapp] had talked to a bunch of the players form Tampa Bay and after (Monte) Kiffin decided to go with his son (Lane Kiffin) to (the University of ) Tennessee, they were really upset and he really just thinks they packed it in.
