Coach’s Corner: Gruden had it coming

Editor’s Note: Below is a questions and answers column running each Tuesday called “Coach’s Corner.” Sports editor Josh Koehn and former Gavilan football coach Bob Garcia, father of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia, will talk about all things football.
Koehn: Bobby, it’s Josh Koehn
Garcia: Hey, Josher. What’s going on?
K: Not much. How you doing?
G: I’m doing good. I just got a haircut (from my wife, Linda). How about that?
K: I heard. I heard you’re ready to go. I heard you’re all ready for the Inauguration, looking sharp.
G: I couldn’t make it over there (to Washington), but I’m having a big party at my place?
K: Are you having a party?
G: No. (laughing)
K: Well, I know you’re a big Obama guy and you know I am, so we’re both excited for this.
G: I think it’s going to be great. I hope everything works out for him.
K: Yeah, he’s going to have a tough road, but I think he’ll do a great job. I have a friend out in Washington right now and he was at the big concert they had on Sunday—
G: Wasn’t it beautiful. I watched it on TV. Did you watch it?
K: I saw some of it and it was just huge. My friend said there were 400,000 people there, the biggest crowd he’s ever seen. And he said [today] they’re expecting 2,000,000.
G: Yeah, especially as cold as it was, and everybody out there, and all those songs that all those artists sang, it just gave me goose pimples — just so proud to be an American.
K: Yeah, it really is a great time to be an American, no doubt about it.
G: But anyhow, my Steelers are still rolling. (more…)

Coach’s Corner: I’m no fortune teller

Editor’s Note: Below is a questions and answers column running each Tuesday called “Coach’s Corner.” Sports editor Josh Koehn and former Gavilan football coach Bob Garcia, father of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia, will talk about all things football.
Koehn: Bobby, it’s Josh Koehn.
Garcia: Hey, Josh. What’s happening?
K: Not much. How you doing?
G: I’m doing all right, just got a little chewed out by my son a little bit.
K: Really?
G: Well, that last article we put out, Tampa Bay, I don’t know which paper it was, ran it in its full content. I feel bad that I mentioned, like, Derrick Brooks, a pulled hamstring, that he looked like he was in a wheelchair. He was really trying — it kind of hurt him.
K: Well, you mentioned he had an injury and everything.
G: I know it. Anyhow, whatever. I feel bad about that. I really did.
K: Well, we’re not trying to —
G: We’re not trying to rip anybody. Whatever. … I except full responsibility for what came out of my mouth. What the hell? What more can I say?
G: Well, we’re going to try to keep you out of trouble this week and just talk about the playoffs then.
K: Well, you know what, my two teams that I picked (for the Super Bowl), hell, they’re already out the door. So, I gotta hang it up, man. (more…)

Coach’s Corner: No intensity is the reason for the letdown

Editor’s Note: Below is a questions and answers column running each Tuesday called “Coach’s Corner.” Sports editor Josh Koehn and former Gavilan football coach Bob Garcia, father of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia, will talk about all things football.
Koehn: Bobby, it’s Josh Koehn.
Garcia: Hey, Josher. What’s happening?
K: Not much. Merry Christmas, by the way.
G: Hey, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and you know what, the bleeding has stopped.
K: I bet the last couple days were pretty rough.
G: Oh, I’m telling you, I know a guy who was talking to (Steve) Mariucci, and Mariucci talked with Warren Sapp, [who’s] on that NFL (Network show), and he said [Sapp] had talked to a bunch of the players form Tampa Bay and after (Monte) Kiffin decided to go with his son (Lane Kiffin) to (the University of ) Tennessee, they were really upset and he really just thinks they packed it in. K: Not much, how you doing?
G: I’m doing all right.
K: You got time to talk?
G: You’re darn right. Let me pull over to the side of the road here.
K: OK, good. Did you end up getting a ticket last week when we were talking?
G: No, I hung up and the sheriff pulled over on an off-ramp.
K: OK, good timing then. I would have felt bad if I had gotten you a ticket. If you got one I guess we would have expensed it.
G: You gonna take it off of my record and everything?
K: I don’t know about that. I don’t have that much pull. (more…)

: Oh, I’m on my way home. What’s going on Josher?
K: Not much. How you doing?
G: I’m doing good, man. I’ve been up in Tahoe.
K: Oh yeah. Why did you go up there this weekend?
G: I gave my sister away. She got married.
K: Congratulations.
G: Well, thank you. Yeah, so we just got out of there. We got up there Friday and you could see no snow. And, boy, I tell you what, it came down the last couple days.
K: It’s been snowing a lot, huh?
G: A lot. I tell you what, man, those snowplows have been out and it took us forever to get from Tahoe to Placerville.
K: Where you at right now?
G: I’m approaching Stockton.
K: OK, so it’s good you got out of there then.
G: Oh, I know it. Did we have pretty good rain at home this weekend?
K: It was dumping, really coming down. Very cold too.
G: Too bad it didn’t dump in Atlanta. (more…)
